Health and fitness books are now widely available.  From books about managing your diets to books dealing with complicated illnesses and their cures, books of this kind abound whether in print or as digital copies you can download from the internet.  Perhaps this is an indication of the growing awareness of people about the importance of health, nutrition and keeping fit.  In this day and age of cancer and complicated diseases, people have become, sometimes to the point of paranoia, conscious about their health, about exercising, about diets, about their weights.

I’m constantly being asked all manner of questions from people looking to lose weight. However I always give them this same piece of advice above anything else; ‘Have a sit down for an hour with a pen and paper, and come up with a Weight Loss Plan’.

When creating a weight loss plan, stick to the fundamentals and keep it basic. This means looking at the journey ahead and asking yourself;

‘What Is It That I Am Looking To Achieve?’.

So you’re deciding at this point on the goals that you are setting for yourself. Goal-setting is critical, because without it, you have no clear path to follow. An example could be a woman who has a wedding to attend. She plans to shed several dress sizes – that’s her long term goal. In adition to this, she would have some smaller goals in between to target. Maybe the first would be simply to get to the gym 4 times a week for 2 weeks, and keep it up. It’s simple and achievable. The subsequent goal could maybe be diet related. For example, preparing healthy snacks to eat at work instead of hitting the canteen for junk. By targeting these smaller goals, you are giving yourself a confidence boost each time that you hit the mark.

Next you need to look at training and how it will fit into your lifestyle. In all honesty, I could not offer advice to a person who was unwilling to apply themselves to some form of physical exercise. This could involve some road or track jogging or running, but it would be more beneficial to join a gym and have access to a range of equipment. You can probably work out for yourself which one fares best in terms of the final result….To be fair exercising can difficult to squeeze into a busy schedule, but you tend to find that ‘where there’s a will…’. This is where a training plan is so helpful, you can list all of your tasks throughout the day, then look to see where time for exercise best fits in. A training plan is essential: Too many people stand around debating what to do when there at the gym – it’s not good for motivation! A training plan will mean you know exactly what you have to do when you are about to start your exercise. You must target clear goals in your diet program as well as in your training routine. Aiming for longer distances during your cardio and lifting heavier weights is the way to do this. If you are planning to use the cross trainer machine at the gym, for example, aim to increase the difficulty over time.
