Protein is one of the substances your body needs to grow and work properly. Your body needs protein every day to carry on with its regular activities. Your muscles, especially, is powered by protein to produce contraction so that you can have firm and toned muscles. But the body has to get enough supply of protein in order to do this.

And because of the omega 3 nutrient, tuna meat lessens the threat of arterial disease.

Cottage cheese. It may not seem much to men, but cottage cheese packs a wallop of protein within. It contains an exceptional amount of protein which is relative to what your body needs.

The Lowdown on Carbohydrates

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

When people decide to go on a diet to lose weight, one of the first things they cross out of their food list are carbohydrates. Many people have this impression that carbohydrates make them fat. While it is true that too much of it may cause one to gain weight particularly if one lives a sedentary lifestyle, carbohydrates are really not the enemy. These organic compounds are the body’s main source of energy making them a very important part of a healthy diet.

Carbohydrates are one of the three main food nutrients, with the two others being proteins and fats. There are two categories of carbohydrates simple and complex. Simple carbohydrates such as fruit sugar (fructose), milk sugar (lactose) and table sugar (sucrose) are easily digested and converted into glucose or blood sugar making them a readily available source of energy for the body.

Complex carbohydrates, on the other hand, take longer to digest. The pace at which the body breaks down the food and converts it into glucose is much slower thus providing the body with a steady supply of energy. Complex carbohydrates are foods that are often high in fiber, vitamins and minerals such as vegetables, legumes and whole grains. It is the high-fiber content of these foods that slows down the process of converting carbohydrates into glucose. Another effect of fiber is that it helps normalize blood glucose levels because it takes a long time to leave the stomach and because of this, the absorption of glucose from a meal is delayed.

What then is the implication of all these on dieting? It may please a lot of people to know that omitting pasta and bread from your diet is not really necessary. What is more important is to practice moderation. Eating too much carbohydrates, whether simple or complex, translates to consuming a lot of calories because, after all, a calorie is a calorie. Whatever food you are getting your excess calories from, if you consume large amounts of it, the end result is stored fat which in turn causes you to gain weight.

Instead of loading up on starchy carbohydrates, eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans. These foods are rich in fiber and phytonutrients which are plant compounds that contain a lot of antioxidants. Phytonutrients may help the body fight against disease.

When it comes to rice, choose brown instead of white. As for breads and pastas, go for whole grain. Try other less familiar grains as well such as millet, teff, quinoa and bulgur for your salads and side dishes.

If you can, try to stop eating pastries, cookies, crackers and other foods that are prepared using white flour and refined sugars altogether. These highly processed foods are not only loaded with calories, but they actually have very little nutritional value.

High Fiber Diet: The Cleansing and Weight Loss Benefits It Offers

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

Fiber is known for being a great health food choice and it is easy to see why. It plays a major role in the prevention of disease and in healthy weight management. Just as important, it also supports the natural cleansing and detoxification processes of the body. According to many experts, one should eat between 25-35 grams or even more of fiber daily to maintain good health. Because of the role fiber plays in keeping you healthy, it is important that you find out more about it and how it does its beneficial work in your body.

There are two types of fibers soluble and insoluble. Both types aid in getting rid of toxic substances from the body. As the name implies, soluble fiber which is found in oats, legumes, fruit, beans and nuts, dissolves in water. When it moves through the intestines, soluble fiber draws up the toxins to itself and traps them. When this happens the toxins can no longer be reabsorbed into the bloodstream.

Insoluble fiber does not dissolve in water, this means that it goes through the digestive tract practically intact. As it passes through the intestines, it cleanses the colon by sweeping away the toxins that have accumulated in the intestinal wall. This is the reason why fiber has also been referred to as nature’s broom.

Another important function of insoluble fiber is to tone the bowel muscles. Fiber creates resistance and the bowel muscles get a good workout by pushing against it. This generates wave like motions that transport food through the intestines known as peristalsis which is necessary for healthy elimination which in turn is important in flushing out toxic matter from the body.

You may be wondering how all those toxins are able to enter your body in the first place. There are actually two types of toxins external and internal. External toxins come in the form of pesticides and pollutants from the environment. These substances seep into the earth, water and air and can cause serious health problems. Internal toxins, on the other hand, are formed within the body. These are the by-products of physiological processes that take place everyday like digestion and energy production. When people are unable to digest fats, protein and starches efficiently, what results is an overproduction of internal toxins.

Both external and internal toxins are absorbed by the body and circulate through the system on their way to the liver. As these substances travel within your body, some get deposited in the organs and tissues and this can result in inflammation which can lead to poor health.

Fiber is a powerful weapon that eliminates the toxins in your body by absorbing them from your liver and gallbladder to the gut. For this reason, it is essential that you include a lot of it in your diet. The ideal ratio is 65% insoluble fiber to 35% soluble fiber which is similar to the natural balance found in whole foods. To create a balance, you should eat different types of foods which are rich in fiber. Legumes and unrefined grains such as oats, whole wheat and rice are rich in mixed fibers. Apples, bananas, grapefruit and berries are among the most fiber rich fruits, and for vegetables it’s spinach, endive, cauliflower, broccoli, and carrots.

Weight Loss Supplement Reviews

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

As a consumer, you probably realize how helpful product reviews are. You wouldn’t want to be duped especially in these days of economic turmoil when almost everyone is going through some form of financial struggle.

As a dieter, you need to be particularly cautious when choosing a weight loss product because not only should you spend wisely, but more importantly, you must always safeguard your health. The weight loss industry, after all, is known for being relentlessly profit-oriented regardless of whether the products that come out of it is beneficial to people or not.

Advancements in science and weight loss technology have resulted in the creation of numerous weight loss supplements, programs or systems, which all claim to be the best in the industry. Although there are some that actually deliver what they promise, many rely on advertising hype. Half-truths and outright lies are a major part of the business strategies of some unscrupulous manufacturers. For this reason, weight loss supplement reviews are extremely valuable.

The objective of weight loss supplement reviews is to distinguish the quality products from inferior and questionable ones. It does this by specifically pointing out the lies and the truths that manufacturers say about their products. The information contained in a weight loss supplement review is meant to protect the consumers from being victimized by greedy manufacturers.

Which weight loss supplement should it be?

A good way to get started in choosing the right weight loss supplement is by finding out what’s currently popular. While it does not mean that it’s the best, it at least gives you an idea of what works for others.

It is important that you secure a list of the Food and Drug Administration’s list of harmful ingredients and use it when evaluating the effectiveness and safety of weight loss supplements. Always take a look at the list of ingredients included in product’s formula either on the label or on the product website. Aside from finding out if a supplement contains ineffective or harmful ingredients, you can also find out if it has ingredients which you may be allergic to.

Are prescription weight loss supplements for you?
Prescription drugs are basically for very obese people or for those who have specific needs that cannot be met by over-the-counter weight loss supplements. These drugs have been tested and approved by the Food and Drug Administration and are more potent than over-the-counter products. Majority of the people who have taken prescription weight loss drugs report that they have lost as much as much as 10% of their weight. People with healthy body mass indexes may also take these weight loss drugs as long as they are cleared by their doctors to take them.

No prescription needed
Over-the-counter weight loss supplements can actually be more dangerous than prescription drugs as their use is not regulated. There are people who might misuse them and end up being sick. Using a variety of such supplements alongside each other in an attempt to speed up the weight loss process for instance, may overwork the system. When this happens, the body becomes weaker and is unable to defend itself against threats that may destroy it.

Unproven claims
Just because a supplement is labelled “herbal” or “natural” means it’s healthy and safe. There are many herbal ingredients that cause severe side-effects. Ephedra for one, an extract taken from the Chinese herb Ma Huang, is considered a highly dangerous substance. It has been linked to heart attacks and strokes, just to name a few. To protect yourself, always read the ingredients of any formula that you plan to take. If a product doesn’t have an ingredient list, don’t even consider it.

Protection
Before you buy any weight loss supplement, do some research. Check if any product reviews have been done on it. These articles will give you a pretty good idea about what others think about the product as well as what it contains and how it’s supposed to work. Be wary of products that describe themselves with words such as “miraculous”, “secret”, “exotic”, “breakthrough” and “guaranteed”.

If you have any experience, good or bad, to share with others about any weight loss supplement you have tried, why not write a weight loss supplement review? Evaluate the product and explain to others why it does or doesn’t work. The information you have will help them make wise choices and at the same time keep them protected from unscrupulous manufacturers who take advantage of clueless and unsuspecting dieters.

Do You Know What’s Hiding in Your Food?

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

When you visit a fruit stand or a vegetable stall and see all the healthy looking produce, it’s hard to imagine that they actually contain insecticides, pesticides and fumigants. Unfortunately, not all of them are organically grown. When you take a bite into a traditionally grown fruit which is loaded with toxic substances, your body has to deal with removing all that unwelcome stuff. If you consume foods that contain these same poisons everyday, the repeated work of detoxifying can take its toll on your liver and kidneys. Your body should be able to handle this if it is fed with organic food, for most Americans however, this is not the case.

It is estimated that majority of Americans consume 13 to 20 different pesticides, insecticides or fumigants daily. Particularly at risk are children and pregnant women. The following is a list of some of the pesticides used on fresh produce and their side effects:

1. Insecticides such as orthene, dursban and thiodan can cause headaches, excessive tearing and salivation, muscle twitching, nausea, diarrhea, possible seizures

2. Fungicides such as captan, azoxystrobin and mancozeb can irritate the eyes, skin and respiratory tract.

3. Herbicides such as mecoprop and 2,4 ?D Barrage can increase bizarre or aggressive behavior, irritate mucous membranes and skin, can cause headaches, confusion, vomiting and diarrhea.

4. Iprodione can cause cancer in both humans and animals.

5. Phosmet, a carcinogen, can damage the reproductive system and also interferes with hormones.

6. Benomyl and carbaryl, known carcinogens, can cause birth defects; it can damage the nervous system and the brain; can cause vomiting and diarrhea.

7. Hexchlorocyclohexane high exposure can cause blood disorders, dizziness, headaches, seizures and can affect hormones.

8. Paraquat can cause headaches, cracked hands, and burning sensations in the mouth, throat and chest; can make one feel giddy or lethargic, feverish

9. Azinphos can interfere with hormones.

The above is just a partial list of the toxic substances used in farms all over America. Continuous exposure to these through the regular consumption of traditionally grown foods, can cause great harm to your health.

Unfortunately poultry and meat products also contain toxic substances. In some farms, cattle, pigs and chicken are given antibiotics. Being confined in a building makes these animals more prone to diseases thus the necessity for such medication. When people who eat products from these farms take antibiotics to fight infection, they will find that they have become resistant to these medications themselves.

Aside from antibiotics, cattle are also given hormones to fatten them up. The problem with this is that when humans consume meat from hormone fattened cows, they also fatten up. In Europe, cattle is not allowed to be given the hormone rBGH. The bad news is that in the US hormones are used in approximately 90% of livestock.

There is also the debate about how the presence of hormones in food may be responsible for occurrence of early puberty in young girls. Dr.Samuel Epstein, professor of occupational and environmental medicine at the university of Illinois Medical Center and founder of Cancer Prevention Coalition, explains that because children normally have low sex hormones, even a small increase can produce harmful effects.

We are constantly exposed to toxins. These substances are present in the water we drink, the food we eat, and the water we drink. We need to do something to reduce the level of toxins that enter our bodies and going organic is the answer. Just imagine how much healthier you would feel without all that poison circulating in your system.

It is your responsibility to educate yourself when it comes to matters that affect your health and your family’s health. If you are armed with the right knowledge, you can make informed decisions and you can start get started by eating only organic foods from now on.

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

We have to understand how our body uses calories to effectively lose weight. Calorie is used by our body like fuel to provide energy. And as a result this will disrupt your weight-loss program.

Basically, a less than 1,200 calorie diet is acceptable, although you have to get a suitable calorie-count so that you can lose weight more effectively. Studies have showed of women who have lost considerable amount of weight when they take in less than their target calorie-count.

Some dietitians advise that at various levels of your diet you have to vary your calorie-intake as well. This is because changes in the body weight, energy level and metabolism have to in balance with your calorie-count.

An excellent move would be to have your metabolism in top shape so that the calories you take in will be put to use thus helping you remove those excess weight. Here are some easy to follow techniques:

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day! It’s true to the last word ladies! Women usually skip meals and plunge into their day head on. You might think that you are saving yourself from calories but think again ladies! When your body shuts down for the night it needs to restart in the morning to get it functioning well during the day, get it burning up calories all day long. And when you eat nothing in the morning your metabolism will be slow to start up and you might feel sluggish and have no energy throughout the day.

Experts says a small amount of food is enough. It doesn’t have to be a full meal but some bread, fruit or dairy produce can get you going for your day.
Have a snack. Yes, you read it right! You can take snacks throughout the day. At least every 2 hours will be beneficial. This will eliminate that Im-so hungry-I-can-eat-a whole-pie episodes. Eating mini-meals keeps your metabolism high and on the go. Just keep it to a 200-400 calorie at least.

Think before you eat. Knowing what you will eat gives you a better idea of what you are putting in and what you don’t need to eat. This might take sometime to get used to but its really quite simple. Plan ahead of time what food to eat at every meal time. You will be more energized and have more focus on your work throughout the day. Also be sure to take healthy snacks. Foods that are rich in fiber are the best choice for you.

As soon as your body gets into this routine, you will find it easier to lose those excess weight and stay active all the way. You will be on your way to a healthier you without any adverse effects.

Dieting as a Couple: How to Make it Work?

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

Couples share everything and support each other through any endeavor. They move as one through various stages of life including career, raising children and the likes. Could it be that even through dieting stage unison among couples still possible? Something as important as health caring would deem as a priority in such relationship.

Based on some university researches, it states that when couples unite in aiming for weight loss they have greater potentials in succeeding this task rather than individual effort.

What are the advantages of working together towards weight loss? We found some answers that could explain how it couples are more beneficial with results.
One nutritionist stated that diet talk is not the trend anymore it should be the lifestyle that needs focusing. Resolving issues on food and lifestyle choices among couples is a positive thing that could even lead to a long term effects of weight loss.
Conflicts may arise if there would be any struggle in homes regarding the choice for weight loss and healthy lifestyle. If one of the couples hasn’t committed themselves to the same ideas their partners have it would be best to lead through examples and acceptance would surely follow.

Being a positive trend-setter so to speak is a good way to entice people around you to have the same lifestyle, as stated by a known psychologist. Moreover, suggestive motivation is also needed. If there seems to be less effort coming from your better half setting yourself as an inspiration would definitely work.

Both statements conclude that performing and focusing on weight loss as a team would be a real life changing experience. Moreover, knowing that you are not alone in such endeavor would make the process lighter to bear.
The said psychologist also expresses admiration on couples who have taken most of their task together and weight reduction goal is on the top of his list. He also states that achieving a common goal is not the only prize for couples but the emotional aspects of surviving every trial involved.

Nutrition expert believes that achieving weight loss as a team does not end there and lifestyle change for a long-term plan should be involved. Many people have always conceptualized dieting as something short-lived and limited to reducing calories for the moment in order to lose weight.

In some cases nutritionist believes that most people involve themselves on almost all dieting routines and when they have achieved their goal, they go back to their old ways thereby gaining the weight they have lost. The important thing is to commit to a permanent lifestyle change and adapt healthy eating habits or else it would be an endless cycle of dieting and gaining back weight.

The only thing that is constant in our lifetime is change. And it feels comforting to know that there is someone who would support you during trying times. Imagine going through a very hard time, it is but natural for us to wish that we have someone in our lives who would always give out their hand to extend their love and support.

Some bad health habits that have been a part of our lives for a very long time is indeed difficult to change, but once acceptance and motivation sets in it would have great effects for the health. This is not an easy task that is why such support is needed.
There were instances, as shared by a psychologist that women who are solo dieting often complains how difficult it is to prepare two separate kinds of meals. When one partner is not on the same eating program there were even tendencies to bring temptations on the person who is dieting. Frequently, bringing home foods that are irresistibly delicious really tests a dieter’s will.

Partners could indeed provide support in all undertakings but could have the same effect when they are going the other way. Nutrition experts advices that staying firm on your weight loss goals is the key and not giving up on your partner is very essential.
Once the road couples take have separated and divided into two directions this could put to waste all efforts they have initially took. The best thing to do is to stay committed and pull back your partner on the right track through understanding and limitless support.

The idea of having your team taking the same goal is very comforting. They have equal understanding and shares support on where it is needed.

Working together for a common goal would definitely bring couples together even those on shaky grounds. And the results from such tandem is always best than those that are done alone.

Weight Loss Pills – Do They Really Work?

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

The weight loss pill has been around for ages. The concept of taking a pill to get thin is definitely not a fad but formulas and brand names do become very popular for a while and then would fade away from the public’s memory until another one comes along. The questions people often ask about diet pills are: “Are they safe?” “Are there any negative side-effects?” “Do they really work?”

Diet pills are associated with quick and easy weight loss. For people who are not willing to put in the discipline and commitment that a complete weight loss program requires, these pills are a very attractive option.

If you are reading this article because your interest was piqued by the title, let me tell you upfront that most weight loss pills are fakes. Not only do they not work, but they can actually be harmful to your health. Do not be fooled by advertising gimmicks or even recommendations from well-meaning friends.

According to statistics, Americans spend nearly fifty billion dollars a year for weight loss programs, pills and other related products with almost six billion of it going into the purchase of the same items but of questionable worth and quality.

There are two basic types of weight loss pills—prescription and over-the-counter drugs. Prescription drugs are diet pills that have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after being tested for their effectiveness and safety. These pills have been specifically designed as weight loss aids for obese people. However, these pills are not meant to work on their own but are supposed to be a part of a bigger weight loss plan which includes diet and exercise.

Over-the-counter weight loss pills, on the other hand, have become very popular. They are considered more as food supplements rather than weight loss drugs. What distinguishes them from prescription diet pills is that they have not gone through testing by federal drug agencies and their labels do not contain the same kind of details found in prescription drugs. In spite of these, sales of these pills continue to skyrocket.

It appears that people tend to be more wary of prescription diet drugs than over-the-counter weight loss pills. The latter seem less threatening and are practically available everywhere. Aside from that, they are advertised just like any other consumer product and many people are fooled by the outrageous claims and promises made about these supplements in product websites and late night infomercials. Also, there are certain herb-based pills which people often assume to be safe and more effective. Unfortunately, such is not the case. Ephedra, which is an extract taken from the Chinese herb Ma Huang, was once the weight loss ingredient of choice until it was banned from the market for a year due to its severely harmful side-effects.

There is no diet pill, whether prescribed or over-the-counter, that can take the place of diet and exercise as an effective way to lose weight. No one has claimed to have successfully lost weight using a diet pill after failing to do so on a good diet and exercise program. Furthermore, there is no strong evidence which suggests that diet pills allow for faster weight loss either.

In conclusion, if you want to lose weight effectively and avoid experiencing harmful side-effects, be ready to commit to a serious diet and exercise program. Diet pills have always had a bad reputation and as we have seen, it does have some basis in fact.

Nature Colon Cleanse Weight Loss Product Review

Saturday, October 3rd, 2009

The Nature Colon Cleanse Concept
Most diet products have been promising weight loss through different methods. The choices vary from appetites suppression to fat burning effects. It is very seldom that we find something that would address the digestive system’s wellness.

It is important for people to have a well functioning digestive system particularly the colon area. Recently, colon care has attracted so much attention but very few products could address a solution.

It has been researched that an unhealthy colon means a great clog for the entire circulation of functions in the body which means improper functioning of the liver, kidneys and even the heart. Some researches have shown that colon problems begin with the colon’s blockage with decaying foods, parasites and such which then becomes toxins and cause certain illnesses.

These includes constipation, gas and bloating, weight gain, fatigue, acne and other skin problems and hair fall.

A serious level of toxin build up includes diseases that could greatly affect the cardiovascular system and even cause some cancer. Such findings have caused a stir to find a solution for colon toxin build-up.

The Power Contents for Nature Cleanse
From the product’s website we found the following list of ingredients that formulates this colon cleanser:

•    Marshmallow Root
•    Cascara Sagrada
•    Aloe Leaf
•    Rhubarb root
•    Flax seed

•    Slippery Elm bark

Advantages and Disadvantages
The cleansing system offered by Nature Cleanse is a much gentler formulation that reduces toxin build-up over some period of time. It does not induce an excessive bowel movement which is a common occurrence with other similar products.

The effects of this product has also been well commended by its consumers who have willingly posted their success stories of colon cleansing as well as weight loss

Consumers may also find this product enticing with its free sample offer wherein they would only have to pay a minimal fee for the shipping and handling charges.

As for the downside, we think that this product’s efficacy on cleansing the colon of accumulated toxins has eliminated any thought for this section.

How do we rate Nature Cleanse
Indeed, in this day and age, many people have been taking their dietary system for granted and providing less effort to care for themselves. This is how products such as Nature Cleanse aid these individuals in their daily lives. It eliminates toxin build-up hence reducing one’s weight level as well.
We recommend Nature Cleanse for its gentle formulation that would not cause inconvenience for its users. And interested dieters would have the benefit of trying out this products formula for free.
