<p>Start by taking a look at the meals that you are preparing for your child – and the rest of your family. Make a vow to cook and serve healthier foods, and talk to your doctor openly about what your child should be eating, and how much of it he or she should be eating as well. If necessary, fork out the money for a private nutritionist.</p>

<p>Never use food as any type of reward for your child. This sends all of the wrong signals. Also, never force your child to eat foods that the rest of the family isn’t eating, while depriving them of the foods that the others are eating. That’s just cruel in the grand scheme of things. At the same time, however, don’t deprive them of the technology that is very much a part of their world, such as video games and computers. Just make sure that there is a healthy balance between the two.</p>

The reality of obesity is actually fairly harsh, and this could be why so many people ignore or disregard the problem.</p>

<p>For example, over a twenty year period, between 1980 and the year 2000, the instances of obesity doubled in the United States. The latest numbers suggest that 60 to 70% of the American population is overweight, and this figure includes adults and children.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>As with adults, the instances of obesity have also doubled for children during the same time span. Because of this, more children are being diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, which was thought to only affect adults before 1980. A large percentage of the children who are overweight already have other risk factors for heart disease as well.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Even though we know the causes of obesity – a poor diet coupled with ineffective or non-existent physical activity – we still don’t take measures to prevent obesity. For example, only a handful of people in the United States actually pay attention and adhere to the recommended daily servings that are believed to make up a healthy diet. More than half Americans do not get the right amount of exercise – even if they are not yet obese.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Aside from these harsh realities, there is more, and these realities affect everyone. Obesity has a profound affect on the economy.  Billions of dollars are spent for healthcare each year for obese related conditions, including obesity itself. Again, this affects everyone – not just the people who are obese. Furthermore, many people who are morbidly obese are not able to work, and must either get Social Security Disability or public welfare help.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>If you or someone that you love is obese, you need to take steps today to protect your health. Start with a simple visit to your doctor to determine the best course of treatment. Your doctor may recommend a specific diet and exercise. He or she may prescribe medication that will help you to lose weight. If the situation has extended beyond any help from diet and exercise or medication, your doctor may recommend weight loss surgery.</p>

Why is that? Because we haven&#8217;t got our arsenal of mental armour ready to fire off whenever those little desire buds tempt us with a chocolate or some other little treat; when a little part of our own mind seems to be determined to undermine our resolve by suggesting that its Ok to have a cake now and again.</p>
<p> In this series of articles I want to talk to my contemporaries.. those of us between 55 and 65! If we are overweight &#8211; we are at great risk of just dropping dead! No, seriously..I don&#8217;t want to scare you but have you seen the statistics? Know of anyone who has just suddenly died? I bet you do!</p>
<p> Think.. &#8220;thats not going to happen to me?&#8221;  Well, I am here to tell you that we are all prone to the problems that come with extra weight and now is as good a time as any to get started on loosing some! So let&#8217;s do it together!</p>
<p> In these articles I will help you build up a wall of reasons that will be insurmountable; when you feel a bit weak you will be able to come back and renew your determinaton to make this year the one that works.!</p>
<p> So lets start with &#8211; Why <a href="http://wisehealthywealthy.com">Losing Weight</a> is A Good Idea! And as I am primarily a health therapist I am going to put a physical and medical reason right up there at the top.</p>
<p> 1.    Weight loss prevents high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.</p>
<p> That is a three-in-one reason to steadily loose a few pounds.  It is a fact that heart disease and stroke are one of the primary reasons for disability and death in both men and women.  People who are overweight have a higher risk to have high levels of cholesterol in their blood stream as well as triglycerides (also known as blood fat).</p>
<p> Angina, one type of heart disease, causes chest pains as well as decreasing the amount of oxygen pumped to the heart.</p>
<p> Sudden death also occurs from heart disease and stroke, and usually this strikes with very little warning, signs and symptoms.</p>
<p> It is a fact that by decreasing your weight by a mere five to ten percent, this could positively decrease the chances of you having or developing heart disease or a stroke.  Plus, how your heart functions would also improve as well as your blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride count will decrease.</p>
<p> 2.    Weight loss prevents type 2 diabetes</p>

But it puts in jeopardy our lives as well as how we lead life because of the complications that result from having it.  Both types of diabetes, type one and type two are linked with being overweight.  To those who already have diabetes, regular exercise and losing weight could help in controlling your blood sugar levels as well as the medication you may be currently taking.  Increase your physical activity.  You could simply walk, jog or dance.</p>
<p> My absolute favourite exercise is aquarobics.. imagine swimming around in a warm pool, doing some gentle stretches and a bit of jogging in the water. You feel twenty years younger, get an aerobic work out and stretch some of those muscles and ligaments you can&#8217;t manage to stretch when gravity is not on your side. Check out your local pool!</p>
<p> 3.    Weight loss helps reduce your risk for cancer</p>
<p> Being overweight is linked with a number of kinds of cancer.  Specially for women, the common types of cancer that is associated with being overweight include cancer of the uterus, gallbladder, ovary, breast, and colon.  This is not meant to scare you, this is only to keep you informed.  Men are at risk too from developing cancer if they are overweight.  These include  cancer of the colon, prostate and rectum.  Extra weight, a diet high in fat and cholesterol should as much as possible be avoided.</p>
<p> 4.    Weight loss reduces sleep apnea</p>
<p> Or it could eliminate it all together.  Sleep apnea is a condition wherein one could temporarily stop breathing for a brief period and then would continue to snore heavily.  Sleep apnea causes drowsiness or sleepiness during the day and &#8211; because of being overweight &#8211; could result in heart failure.  Shedding those excess pounds could help in eliminating this problem.</p>
<p> 5.    Weight loss reduces the pain of osteoarthritis</p>
<p> When our joints have to carry extra weight, the strain can cause osteoarthritis, a painful condition which is only manageable with pain killers. However, many have found that loosing a few pounds does decrease the pain levels and make the condition more manageable.</p>
