Obesity is a major affliction today. It results in a number of lifestyle ailments such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol not to mention type 2 diabetes and a host of other acquired ailments. Apart from these physiological conditions, obese people have a lack of self-confidence, suffer from social discomfort and reduced productivity and are generally looked down upon.
The question is why are people overweight? To begin with, manufacturers and advertisers of junk food have flooded the market with a plethora of useless and calorie-laden foods. These people benefit the most from the food chain. The foods that we are talking about are loaded with saturated fat and sodium, besides being full of empty calories.
Why Can’t I Lose Weight? This is a question that many of you must have asked yourself. Do we blame the manufacturers, the advertisers or the fast food chains for our condition? No, the blame squarely lies with us. Obesity is a lifestyle condition that is the result of well, our faulty lifestyles. Why don’t we think before popping that bag of potato chips and guzzling the soft drink when sitting down to watch TV? Are doughnuts a good choice for breakfast? Little things add up, and so is the case with junk food. Every bit of junk food that we eat piles on the flab.
Change your diet to include foods from different food groups such as whole grains, vegetables, fruits, lean meat, fatty fish and chicken. Make sure that you don’t eat food that is highly processed. Cook your food by steaming, boiling, baking, roasting, poaching and other healthy ways of cooking. In order to loose weight you don’t need to starve or follow fad diets. The only people who benefit from fad diets are those who promote such diets.
People may ever diet and loose weight only to gain it back in a few weeks. Along with eating right we also need to increase our body metabolism by exercising. This will help us to accelerate the process of weight loss.
We have only ourselves to blame for being overweight or obese. And it is only us who can do something about losing weight and becoming fit and trim.

The metabolism of the body uses the food that we consume to convert it as energy, fat or waste. When too much food is consumed, a portion of it is converted to fat and stored. Even when the food consumption is less but a slow metabolism could lead to accumulation of fat. When the physical activity is very less, then rather than burn energy, accumulation of fat takes place. Certain medical conditions also can lead to accumulation of fat leading to overweight or obesity.
Fat burners are weight loss supplements. They are neither regulated nor are prescription required to purchase them. Stimulants such as caffeine and xanthines are present in some weight loss supplements. Stimulants are not present in some of the weight loss supplements in the market. Some supplements are claimed to be capable to block or burn fat. Some guarantee fat cell death. Some supplements are advertised as carb blockers which can inhibit carbohydrate metabolism. There are some which claim to balance sugar levels. The weight loss market, in recent times, has found an increase in supplements that claim to be appetite suppressants.
There are numerous weight loss products in the market. These include Xenadrine, Zantrex, Nutrex LIPO-6X, Hydroxycut, LIPO-6 by Nutrex, Stacker 2 and Chitosan. The weight loss market is not regulated. There are no compulsions for the manufacturers to prove their claims. Most often, all they need to do when they make tall claims is also say that these claims are not evaluated by the appropriate authority such as the Food and Drug Authority. In the marketplace it is common for each manufacturer to attempt to outdo its competitors which leads to tall claims and sometimes out rightly misleading claims. For instance, you could check up what consumers and reviewers say about a product in the Internet, for instance, by searching Nutrex LIPO-6X reviews for Nutrex LIPO-6X.
However there are avenues to protect the consumer from retailers getting away with unsubstantiated claims. For instance they can approach the Federal Trade Commission in the United States and Health Canada in Canada. However, these institutions find it difficult to monitor the market with numerous products. However, there are instances where such irrational claims have been challenged with consumers launching a class action suit against the company. There are reputed well established companies with a brand image to protect. There is also the fly by night companies. You need to check out on the companies, the product and the claims and be satisfied before you buy the weigh loss supplements.

Food that is consumed is converted into energy by the metabolism of the body. It is converted into energy, waste or fat. Food, when taken in excess, not all of it will be converted into energy. What is not converted to energy gets accumulated as fat. If the metabolic rate is slow, even if the food consumed is less, accumulation of fat could result. Fat is accumulated when physical activity is low and energy remains unused. Obesity or overweight results also from certain medical conditions.
Fat burners are also weight loss supplements. These products are not regulated nor do they need a prescription to purchase them. There are some weight loss supplements which have stimulants like xanthines or caffeine. Some others do not contain stimulants of any kind. Some supplements claim to block or burn fat.. There are others which promise fat cell death. Some supplements are advertised as containing carb blockers that can restrain carbohydrate metabolism. There are some who claim to balance the sugar levels. Recent trends indicate that more products declaring to be appetite suppressants are introduced in the market.

Overweight and obesity have become so serious a problem across the world that it has now been recognized as a major health problem. Over a billion people all over the world have overweight problems or obesity. Over 60 percent of the adult population in the United States has this condition. It is associated and identified easily with the phenomenon of urbanization in the developed and developing countries. It is associated to the modern lifestyle and dietary practices. Also associated is the sedentary lifestyle. The weight loss market is estimated to be about US$80 billion. Investment in research to find out the causes and ways of weight loss has been going on. While there are many claims, equally are there counter claims. While the debate, often inconclusive as yet, goes on, so too have beliefs and notions about overweight problems and weight loss proliferated. Often some of these popular notions simply do not have any basis.
The immediate response to an overweight problem is to take on a starvation diet or crash diet to burn away the excess fat accumulated. This is based on the firm belief that starvation or near starvation is the best way for weight loss. However, this may seem to work in the beginning. The metabolism goes down but hunger increases. It could also leave one weak and undernourished. It is better not to starve but instead take more number of intakes of lesser quantity of food.
There is a popular belief that carb-free diet will make the unpleasant flab vanish. It is not as though that all carbohydrates are bad. There are good carbohydrates that body needs which make one feel full for a long time. This not only reduces hunger, but keeps away the craving for food. Weight loss requires that the digestion is slow. The insulin is released slowly. Fat in the body is burnt away. Bread digests fast and is an example of bad carbohydrate. Weight loss diets are also available in the market. Some of them are the 7 day diet, Anne Collins Weight Loss Program, The Atkins diet, Negative Calorie Food & Recipes, NutriSystem, Fit Yummy Mummy, Diet Smart and Beverly Hills Diet. You need to check out what suits you based on your needs.
The important thing is to lose weight and to maintain this weight for years. You should find out the reasons why you are overweight. You should also know your food compatibility.

Some people believe that skipping meals is good for losing weight. But then the body would respond in the compensatory mode leading to over-eating the next meal. It is better to identify what food suits your metabolism. Keeping a record of the food that you eat and how your body reacts to the food, is a good way of knowing what food would keep your weight down while keeping you healthy. Cutting down fat content in the diet is believed to be good to lose weight. But the human body requires some amount of fat for keeping healthy. A drastic reduction in fat could lead to imbalance in the hormones and could result in diseases. One must learn to choose the right amount of natural fat. For instance, olive oil, avocado oil, mustard oil and walnut oil reduce the speed of digestion contributing to weight loss. It is not as though that more calorie consumption equals more fat accumulation.
There is the widespread belief that a higher calorie intake means overweight. Alternatively it is believed that a reduced calorie intake will reduce weight. Rather than reduction in calorie intake, it is actually the type of food that matters. Instead of reducing the calorie intake, what is required is to avoid or drastically reduce food that is metabolically more fattening. For example, instead of taking fruits in the form of juice, it is better to consume whole fruit to lose weight.
You can keep your body physically fit by regular physical exercises. It also helps in keeping away fat accumulation. Popularly sweating, and more of it, is equated to burning away of the fat. However, this is not true. Sweating is a body mechanism to cool the body when heated up. Everybody does not sweat alike. Sweating varies from person to person. There are many ways to lose weight. There are also many type of exercises to lose weight. You should be able to identify the type of exercises that your body needs. There are also workout without weight for those who prefer this type of exercises.
There is a mistaken belief that drinking more water is vital for losing weight. Some also drink hot water after each meal. No doubt that drinking water is important for the body as most of the body consist of water which s also the medium for its functions. Besides this the toxins in the body gets flushed out better with more water. But water does not flush away the fat by any chance.

Hoodia gordonii is a succulent plant found in Namibia, Angola, South Africa and Botswana. The San people of Kalahari Desert were found to possess the knowledge of its many uses. They used the plant as an appetite suppressant when they go for hunting which would last a few days. The extracts of this plant was patented by South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in 1997. CSIR named the extract P57. CSIR then sold the exclusive rights of P57 to Phytopharm, a British drug company. Phytopharm in turn licensed the right to produce to Pfizer. But Hoodia became internationally well known only after BBC reported on the plant in 2003. Later in 2004, 60 Minutes reported its use as a natural appetite suppressant.
The drug was introduced and sold in the market as a weight loss drug. In all these hype, the San people were simply not considered. When the media confronted Phyotopharm about biopiracy, the company claimed that the San no longer existed. But the San Bushmen lived in the Kalahari Desert part of South Africa and other region where Hoodia is found. CSIR decided to share a portion of their royalty with the San in 2003. The share was estimated to be 0.003% of retail sales. The P57 rights were later returned by Pfizer to Phytopharm who in 2004 licensed it to Unilever. Unilever was also producing such diet foods as Slim Fast. Unilever claimed that it would use Hoodia to introduce functional food products.
Many Hoodia products soon began to flood the burgeoning weight loss market. The products were launched in various forms such as pills, diet food, shake, liquid and capsules. These were launched under various brand names such as Dex-L10 Hoodia, Hoodia Extract, H57 Hoodia, Hoodoba, Hoodia SlimQuick, Hoodia Pure, Hoodia Shake, Tru Hoodia Diet, Hoodia Gordonii Shake Mix, HoodiThin Liquid, Desert Burn and Hoodia Supreme. Invariably the products contained Hoodia along with other useful ingredients. Some of these products are attempting to carve out a niche market. The focus of ads for Slimquick Hoodia is women for instance. It includes calcium, Vitamin D3 and Green Tea in addition to Hoodia
Two additional patents have since been acquired by Phytopharm fro treating gastric disorders. A number of patents have also been filed subsequently. Hoodia, it has been discovered, could be useful for treating a number of other disorders like sexual dysfunction, and the operation of glands such as the prostrate, saliva and sweat glands.
