Where diets go wrong

Monday, June 1st, 2009

The first reaction of most people who discover that they’ve put some weight on is to eat less food. It sounds simple enough and reasonable. Since food is what got us into trouble it follows that eating less of it will make everything right again. Nearly every diet or eating plan in the magazines or on the Internet says pretty much the same thing: eat less food. Therefore the answer to this problem is very simple and handy. Sure, going with less food than usual is a challenge, but it also carries with it a sort of expiation feeling.

Unfortunately for those who hope that lowering the food intake would help them lose weight, this doesn’t work. Over the thousands of years of evolution the human body had to face starvation many times and had to find ways of surviving. We are the offsprings of those who managed to survive periods of starvation by coping with the lack of food. Therefore, a simple decrease in the volume of food is not going to make a big difference because the body will simply compensate for it by lowering the amount of energy produced and limiting the capacity for effort.

The best way to reach your weight loss goal is to work around this defense system by eating smart instead of eating less. Overweight people and thin people eat roughly the same number of calories per day because they share the same required amount of food. However, overweight people eat far more fat than thin people, who seem to prefer complex carbohydrates that are easily broken down and metabolized by the body. This is the biggest difference between the two groups and the best point to start when considering what and how to change in your eating patterns.

Good dieting always takes time. The excess weight was not accumulated over night and will never go away in a single day. Every year hundreds of thousands of people are searching the Internet and reading magazines in order to get dieting tips and to find the modern Holy Grail: a pill that can make fat disappear in an instant. Well, maybe this is an exaggeration, but you get the idea. You have probably encountered by now a lot of advertisements promising such amazing results with the help of some quasi magic ingredient or other. And you probably know that losing weight doesn’t work like that.

The only way to lose weight for good is to avoid eating foods that are rich in fat and to exercises on a regular basis. Dieting without exercising is pointless because all the weight lost by eating less food will come right back in the following months. The sedentary lifestyle most of us lead is one of the causes behind the recent increase in the number of overweight people around the world. Cars, office jobs and foods rich in fat have brought us an unforeseen problem because the easy modern life has a price tag, just like everything else.

Weight Loss Remedy – Overcoming Weight Loss Excuses

Monday, June 1st, 2009

We often make excuses when it comes to losing weight. Because of this, we stop ourselves from doing our diet routine, gain more weight and get disappointed in the end. How do you stop making those weight loss excuses?

You make many weight loss excuses and it automatically comes in without realizing it. Losing weight is not that easy but you have to discipline yourself. Next time, ask yourself why you make excuses every time you commit it.

Some of the most common excuses include:

• No time to do any exercise.
• No time to prepare healthy meals.
• Too old to exercise.
• No enough support
• Not feeling well.
• Bored with exercising.

The excuses mentioned above are just a few. You might have noticed that some are just lame excuses. So how do you stop making those weight loss excuses?

Find out why you are making excuses. Are they acceptable? Or you are just thinking of another better way? If not, then why are you not taking some action? There are some who didn’t like being overweight yet they’re doing nothing about it because they are afraid that they might fail and end up still overweight. Don’t be afraid of change…

The way you think will affect how you succeed with your weight loss routine. The more negative you think, the more excuses you’ll commit and fail. Don’t let your low self-esteem win over you. Strive harder for something that is important to you.

Lack of time with exercises is the one of the most common used excuses because we are too occupied with other things. Lack of time is not a valid excuse because if we think that losing weight is really important for us, we need to find time to for it no matter how busy we are. Do as much as you can each day and you’ll feel more energetic.

In order overcome weight loss excuses, know you need to understand the reason why you’re making an excuse and think its importance to you. Discipline yourself; strive for a happy and healthy you.

If you’re having difficulties in losing weight alone, join support groups where you can meet people who can make your weight loss routine successful. Clinically proven products are also available to help you in your weight loss problems, such as Proactol™, a new clinically proven fat binder. It is made of non-soluble and soluble fibers, immediately attaches to fats found floating on the surface of the stomach. This creates a fat-fiber complex that is too large to be absorbed in the small intestine, allowing the fat to pass naturally through the body. In clinical studies, Proactol™ has been proven to bind up to 28% of dietary fat intake. You can take it in after eating. Support groups and clinically proven products such as Proactol™ help you to enjoy a healthier lifestyle.

Yo-Yo diets

Monday, June 1st, 2009

Most people who have ever tried dieting have at one time or another gone through yo-yo diets. These are the classic ideal of all those who don’t like what the measuring tape is telling them about their waists and thighs. Everybody wants a diet and some pills that can help them shed a significant number of pounds fast. In a week or two, if possible. However, all those pounds that you have been fast to discard are coming right back in the next month or so. Probably with some liver or stomach problems from the pills used to speed up the process.

Yo-Yo diets always sound like a good idea because people don’t like to think that weight problems are long-term problems which should be managed as such. They are looking for the miracle cure, the three-day wonder that would fix everything in a couple of days. Unfortunately, long-term problems solved in three days have a way of refusing to stay solved. It’s a sort of nudge from Mother Nature reminding us that we should not try and hurry things, especially when it’s impossible to do so. It doesn’t matter what the labels of dozens of pills say because weight loss is not a short term problem.

The best weight loss advice one could get comes from dietitians and physicians, but people tend to stay away from these professionals. Their answers offer no hope for a simple solution and their eating plans and diets seem to take forever. Nevertheless, these neglected experts know that the body has gained weight in time and will shed it in the same manner. Trying to force a new weight gain/loss rhythm is not healthy for the body and fast diets always end up causing damage to the internal organs and decreasing the muscle mass.

What a Yo-Yo diet can never give you is the guarantee that all the weight lost in one week won’t return after a couple of glasses of soda and two or three burgers. A proper diet that takes at least four weeks to complete allows the body to get rid of the accumulated fat and not of water or muscle mass. Crash diets that cut off your intake of calories may seem to work for the moment, but your body is going to pay a heavy price as the internal organs are left without the required daily nourishment.

Short term solutions always lead to long-term disasters and what looked like a sound proposition yesterday might prove to be a health hazard tomorrow. While your weight problem is nothing to be proud of, there is no magic solution that is going to make everything right just like that. You are going to have to put together a sound eating plan, exercise on a regular basis and make sure you’re not putting anything back on. There are many recipes fit for dieting that you can choose from and even cook yourself. Dieting is always simpler than it sounds. It starts with you reaching out for a bag of snacks and remembering that an apple would be better for both your waistline and self-esteem.

Are All Natural weight Loss Plans Beneficial to Your Health?

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

All natural weight loss plans sound almost too good to be true. Is it even possible to lose weight, look and feel great without being forced into an unnatural diet or without taking dangerous drugs?

Well, if you want to lose weight, you have to have a plan. You have to set some goals and pursue them. And you have to be patient. There is no such a thing as fast weight loss. You cannot take a pill and get rid of all the fat deposits in a matter of weeks or months. Your body just doesn’t work this way.

Here is a good plan with all the things you will have to do to lose weight safely and effective:

1. Exercise.
This is nothing new really, but exercise is probably the most important predictor of whether you will succeed at long term weight loss and weight loss maintenance. In order for exercise to be helpful in weight loss, you should strive for a minimum of five 30-minute sessions per week. The good news is that recent research has shown that three 10-minute sessions in a day are as good as one 30-minute session.

The goal of exercise for weight loss is to burn more calories, although exercise offers many other benefits as well. How many calories you burn depends on the frequency, duration and intensity of your activities.

Even though regularly scheduled aerobic exercises are best for losing fat, any extra physical activity helps burn calories. And since lifestyle-related activities may be easier to fit into your day, you should think about ways you can increase your physical effort. For example, make several trips up and down stairs instead of using the elevator, park at the far end of the lot and walk instead of taking the bus.

2. Stay focused on being healthy, not on becoming thin.
Many people become more successful at long-term weight loss when their motivation changes from wanting to be thinner to wanting to be healthier. Change your mindset to think about selecting foods that will help your body’s health rather than worrying about foods that will affect your body’s weight. The Food Pyramid offers a basic outline of the types and amounts of food you should eat each day to give your body the nutrients it needs for optimal health.

Adopting a new eating style that promotes weight loss must include lowering your total calorie intake. But decreasing calories doesn’t mean giving up taste, satisfaction or even ease of meal preparation. One way you can lower your calorie intake is by eating more plant-based foods – fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Strive for variety to help you achieve your goals without giving up taste or nutrition.

3. If you have to use any weight loss pills, don’t try those advertised as “fat burners” or other nonsense of this kind. There are plant extracts out there that can help you reduce the sensation of hunger and bind some of the fat in your meals so you get the benefit of a relaxed approach and positive attitude.

A good attitude is essential for your success. A good attitude can help you have patience and not try to see fast results. Fast weight loss will only result in gaining back all the fat and then some.

All natural weight loss plans and baby steps do work wonders!

Loose Your Weight The Hoodia Way

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

Hoodia gordonii, an herb, was well known to the San Bushmen who inhabits the Kalahari and Namib Deserts. Being traditionally nomadic hunters, they go for hunting that will last for about a week. With scarce food around, they habitually resort to consuming hoodia which will help them manage without food by being not hungry. They would first remove the roots, leaves, spines and flowers from the plant. Then they would peel away the skin of the stem and eat them. Scientists have found that what it does is to mimic the signals that glucose will send to the nerve cells in the brain, but many times powerful than glucose. This will suppress your urge to eat. Naturally this wisdom of the Bushmen can be a boon to those who are for ever doing all they can to shed their unwanted fat.

The bioactive compound was identified and isolated by scientists at Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). This national laboratory of South Africa collaborated with Phytopharm, a British company, to carry out intensive studies on hoodia and the reported appetite suppressant characteristic. They were able to isolate the compound that gave this effect and called it p57. The appetite suppressing feature of hoodia was effectively confirmed by the scientists after several studies and clinical trials. This further scientifically proved that this traditional wisdom and practice had a scientific basis after all. Prolonged use of hoodia did not show any side effects. The evidence of its safety was demonstrated by the fact that the Bushmen have been using the plant quite confidently for thousands of years. With better standards of living, the affluent society has been beset with yet another major health catastrophe, obesity. Fitness and health consciousness has led to a huge market for products that can manage and control obesity. Naturally hoodia raised phenomenal interest in the market.

Hoodia gordonii began to be marketed in capsule and liquid form. It is also marketed in combination with Green Tea extract that contains naturally occurring caffeine, chromium, Niacin as Nicotinic Acid, and Cocoa extract as tru hoodia complex. But the problem was that hoodia gordonii with p57 was found only in Southern Africa, and that too in the wild. This will not meet the growing market demand. Besides, the cost will be prohibitive and increase as its availability diminishes.

There were attempts to produce p57 synthetically in the lab so that this can be produced sufficiently and cheaply. This did not succeed. Hoodia had to be from the naturally collection or cultivated. This led to over exploitation that led CITES to list it as a plant that will soon have to be declared as a threatened species. With this, hoodia became a plant that came under control and restriction with regard to its trade.

Lose Weight, Have Hoodia

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

Hoodia gordonii is a flowering plant that belongs to the family Apocynaceae. It is a plant that reaches up to 1 meter in height. It has large purple or tan color flowers with strong smell. It is also called locally xhooba, Ghaap and khoba. It is also known as ‘Queen of the Namib’ and ‘Bushman’s Hat’. Hoodia is found naturally in Southern Africa in the semi-deserts of the countries of Namibia, South Africa, Botswana and Angloa. It is particular to the Namib Desert.

The San Bushmen who inhabit the Kalahari Desert have always known about the various uses of hoodia. They are known to consume the stems of hoodia plant during the long drawn hunt that takes them far away often without sight of food for days. The plant suppresses their urge to eat and drink. They also use the plant for treating various other health problems such as severe abdominal cramps, diabetes, hemorrhoids, hypertension, tuberculosis and indigestion. There are varieties of hoodia plants, about twenty of them. of them, it is only hoodia gordonii that is found to contain hunger. The plant flowers after about five years.

The fact that the San Bushmen used hoodia was first noted and reported to the outside world by a Dutch anthropologist in 1937. A scientific examination of the plant of its reported benefits however commenced only in 1963 when the national laboratory of South Africa, CSIR (Council for Scientific and Industrial Research) began to study the plant. Along with the scientists of a British company, Phytopharm, they isolated the active ingredient of hoodia. This ingredient, a steroidal glycoside, was named p57. It soon began to be commercially exploited and sold worldwide through the health food stores. Sold in the capsule and liquid form, much has been written about it on hoodia diet 57. Hoodia is marketed as an appetite killer for those who wish to lose weight and control obesity.  Hoodia is found to send signals to the brain than makes you feel that you are full.

With hoodia becoming popular, the plant was indiscriminately harvested from its natural habitat. This led CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), to declare the plant as facing the risk of being included as an endangered species. CITES included it in Appendix II. This meant that its trade had to be controlled. The Botanic Gardens Conservation International listed the plant in 2008 as facing extinction due to indiscriminate extraction by traders. Hoodia soon began to be cultivated under government control in farms in Kalahari Desert. It also helped to ensure that the San Bushmen also received benefits from the royalty.

Is Fast Weight Loss through Exercise Possible?

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

We are obsessed as a society with having everything on demand. If we decide we want a new car, we have to have it now, women freak out if they cannot get pregnant the very minute they’ve decided they want to have a child and if we think about weight loss, then it must surely be fast weight loss. We can’t settle for anything less!

Fortunately it’s been already proved that fast weight loss pills don’t work. You may shed a few pounds at first, but in the end you will gain twice as much back. Fewer and fewer people are duped by false claims and pretenses of dishonest marketers. It’s been said that they prey on human insecurities. I don’t think so! They prey on our obsession with having everything right here, right now and without any effort on our part – if we are willing to pay the price.

And because the wonder pills don’t work, people have turned to exercise. Marketers who advertise fast weight loss exercise programs or devices prey on the same here and now urgency. And they have given exercising a bad name too.

These are reviews I have found on a web site specialized in exposing infomercial scams:

“The [...] is actually a decent product, but it has major flaws. The way that the pulley system works is that the pulleys are attached to the frame with a free rotating bracket. This causes an excessive amount of wobbling when trying to use any of the exercises. Using the bench press is nearly impossible at higher weights due to the wobbling. Don’t waste your $400+ for the [...].”

“I purchased the [...] through [...] Network. I was very unhappy with the whole motion of the machine; it was uncomfortable and unnatural not to mention very shoddy craftsmanship. I called [...] to return it. They said I was past the 1 month return.”

“Unfortunately, I got sucked into the infomercial, thinking “this is it”. I ordered the worthless thing and did not see any results. It was a bunch of plastic. Have returned the item a week before Christmas 2006, and have yet to get a refund. They keep telling me that they have not received the item. Don’t waste your money!!!!”

So the info should be clear by now for everyone to see: fast weight loss doesn’t work.

Exercise is the best way to lose weight.

Try to remember that “losing 15 pounds in two weeks” is nothing to celebrate. It is important to realize that the more quickly weight is lost, the more likely the loss is coming from water and muscle, not fat.

Since muscle tissue is critical in keeping our metabolism elevated, losing it actually leads to a decrease in the amount of calories we can each day without gaining weight. Fat loss is best achieved when weight is lost slowly. Strive for a weight loss of no more than 1-2 pounds per week. One pound of weight is equivalent to 3500 calories. By making small changes like eliminating 250 calories a day from food and expending 250 calories a day from exercise, you can lose one pound (of mostly fat) per week.

Exercise for weight loss and for your general health, but do it all with good measure. Rome wasn’t built in a day either.

Is Your Diet Helping You Lose Weight?

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

The way you diet can do wonders for your body-image and health in the long run or it can forever ruin your hopes for looking gorgeous and feeling great. Everybody is into dieting today, regardless of whether they’re doing it knowingly or not. We all believe that we should eat more broccoli and a lot more raw fruits and vegetables and less fat and so on.

And for the most part of our lives we do try to stay on the right side of healthy, but it’s not always easy. Add to that the fact that there are so many conflicting stories on what’s hot and what’s not when it comes to healthy foods and you can easily find yourself in a dieters’ hell.

So what can you do to be sure your diet is both helping you to lose weight and stay healthy in the long run?

The most important thing when it comes to diets is to use common sense. Common sense wouldn’t let you starve to death with plenty of food around you and it would most likely make you feel you’ve had too much when you give way to your eating cravings! So yes, common sense is your best ally when it comes to healthy diet choices.

The next very important thing is to understand that your body needs proteins, fats, sugars, fibers, vitamins and minerals at all meals if it is to feel satisfied with what you’ve been eating. Ideally, every time you eat, your plate should have some protein, a little fat and a little fibrous mass to ensure that you feel full and satisfied.

This takes some planning and for some of us planning can be hard because we are so much into the “mindlessly munching on pretzels” habit. You have to admit it, it’s a lot easier to reach out for a bag of whatever junk food is available than to plan a balanced meal.

It also means that if you plan to replace potato chips with a fruit snack, you won’t feel good about it and it won’t make you feel full. An apple followed by, say, some plain yogurt, will do more to keep you filled than two apples. Have a bit of everything at every meal!

Another thing we hear all the time is that raw food is better – as in healthier – than cooked food. It follows that you have to eat as much raw food as possible. But you are not told that eggplants and beans sometimes harbor toxic compounds that can wreak havoc on your digestive tract if you eat them raw. Many starch containing plants cannot be eaten raw because our bodies do not process that particular type of starch unless transformed by high temperature processing – cooking, that is.

Other veggies, like carrots, contain fragile nutrients that can be destroyed in a frying pan. But cooked carrots still contain tons of great nutrients and vitamins. And no, there is no evidence that sushi is any better for you than grilled salmon. What to do then? Eat a mixture of raw and cooked fruits and veggies, and use common sense. If it’s normally eaten raw, go for it. If it’s usually cooked into a culinary delight, don’t eat it raw.

Diet choices should be made according to your own body’s needs and way of life. It is really of no use to starve yourself or eat disgusting foods just because others said it’s healthy.
