What you need to know about Low Fat Diets:

Thursday, December 24th, 2009

It makes sense as a weight loss strategy because fat has more calories than carbohydrates or proteins, making it the most important food constituent to limit.

What you should know about Low Fat Diets.

All varieties of added fats, such as butter, margarine, mayonnaise, sour cream, and salad dressings, should be reduced or eliminated altogether. Either eat lower fat versions of your favorite high fat foods, such as snack foods, cheese, red meat and all fried foods, or rigorously moderate your portions.  Many low-fat diets are based on increasing your consumption of carbohydrates such as those found in potatoes, breads, and pastas.

Dietary programs which are high in fat have been linked to overweight, cardiac problems, and several sorts of cancer. This plan encourages consumption of foods naturally low in fat like fruits and vegetables, which contain vital nutrients.

Foods like vegetables, fruits and whole grains are naturally low in fat, and are healthy choices.

Many high fat and sugar foods are bad for you, and can lead to weight gain in height. Reducing consumption of ice cream and cookies is always a better thing.

There is evidence that low fat diets can help you avoid health problems such as high cholesterol leaves, heart disease, and obesity.

Some foods are low in fat but high in calories. A good demonstration of this is bread and pasta, although both are low in fat they have a high caloric impact when eaten excessively.

There are so many foods that are labeled “low fat” or “reduced fat”, yet have lots and lots of sugar and excess calories, such as various snack bars, cookies and cake, ice cream and other sweets.  Yes, those foods are low in fat but are not healthy.

Many people, and even some low fat diets, seem to think that all fats are created equal, but research shows  that is far from the case.  Monounsaturated fats, the type found in olive oil and certain oily fish, have been found to be essential to a healthy body and mind.

Some vitamins, for example vitamins A, E and K are found predominantly in fatty foods. Take a vitamin pill if you don’t consume much fat in your foods.

Unfortunately, high fat foods are very tasty. It’s too bad they’re not good for us. Therefore, if you try to eliminate fat from your diet, you end up with boring, bland meals, making it less likely that you’ll stick to the diet. There are surprisingly tasty low-fat food options available to get you started on the right kind of weight loss program.
There are a wide variety of grains that you can add to your low-fat diet to help you start losing weight right away. These grains include pastas that eliminate the creams sauces and stick to marinara or vegetables, bran flakes, oatmeal, reduced fat granola or rice cakes. Whole wheat pasta is another nice, high-fiber and low-fat alternative.
The fat content in dairy products is normally extremely high, however there are ways to obtain the recommended calcium dosage minus the fat. If you want less fat in your diet switch to skim milk. You can substitute ice cream with sorbet, have low fat cheese, eat your yogurt plain, and only use fake whipped cream. You can include dairy products in a low fat diet plan, but in moderate portions.
White meat from turkey or chicken are good options, as are pork tenderloin, egg whites, fish, turkey sausage, tuna packed in water, and very lean ground beef. Moderation is the ket to staying on a low-fat diet. By choosing low-fat alternatives to higher fat foods, like an egg white omelet instead of a whole egg omelet, so you can enjoy the foods you like, while still keeping the weight off.
If your goal is to maintain a low-fat diet, adding any fruit or vegetable should help you get there. Even though avocados are high in fat, they are a powerhouse of nutrition and high in Omega-3 fatty acids, so are worthy of being included in even a low fat diet.  Eating avocadoes will not prevent you from losing or maintaining a healthy weight as long as you do not eat them to the exclusion of all other foods.
Eating the low fat way doesn’t mean having to give up delicious and tasty food items.  You just have to apply your natural intelligence to your goal. Choose air-popped popcorn over oil-popped popcorn. Instead of high fat pudding, try pudding made with skim milk instead. Stay away from ice cream as it is chock full of fat. Try frozen yogurt instead. You can even add in fresh fruit for an added health factor that just so happens to be delicious.
Avoid trying for a no-fat diet as there is such as thing as good fats and they are essential. Even if a food contains less fat, it is not necessarily good for you or less fattening. Foods high in sugar are also not healthy. Select brands that are low fat and low in sugar when you have a choice.

Switching to a low fat diet can help improve your health and weight.

Dislocation is Not an Answer

Friday, August 21st, 2009

The dislocated diet and all its derivatives are based on the principle that each food, if consumed individually, will not cause you to gain weight. So, by consuming only a group of aliments at each meal(or during a day, depending of the method chosen) you will manage to lose weight, eating without restrictions and in any quantity.

The weekly diet imposes that you only eat one group of aliments each day (fruits, vegetable, soups and so on). If for example you want to eat chicken, then you will have kitchen the entire day, at breakfast, lunch, dinner, with no additional aliments next to it.

The daily diet means that instead of eating one type of food during the entire day you will have to eat at each meal a different aliment. Because this way you can actually get a bit of balance into your daily diets, it is the most popular option of the method.

This diet is based on the fact that when eating the same food we tend to feel satiety easier. This means that when eating the same things we will be bored very easy with our meal and stop eating earlier. This means we eat less, so we lose weight. It’s clear why we are not allowed to stick to this diet for a very long time because the lack of diversity can cause important lacks and health problems.

In a short time we might register important physique transformations, because we eat very little.

It doesn’t matter if the diet seems pretty balanced, the truth is that eating the aliments separately will trigger a bad assimilation process. The following statements are just a few of the disadvantages of this diet:

- When you finish the diet, we can experience a sudden gain of weight.

- Muscles and internal organs are weakened during the days we consume only fruits of vegetables, because they lack proteins.

-A tiredness sensation will make itself felt.

- The diet is not adapted for an active person.

- There is no way to prove the bases of this diet scientifically because aliments are treated as they come regardless of the way they are eaten.

- Alimentary dislocation can cause growth delays in children.

- The diet is monotonous and hard to follow in the long run.

This is not a healthy diet because it is not diversified. It should not affect general health and never claim any essential nutrients from a day’s diet.

Obesity In USA

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

Obesity is a problem faced by both children and adults alike, worldwide. The number of cases of obesity in America has continued to rise by a great amount over the years. With more people engaging themselves in various tiring activities and therefore having little time to cook nutritious, healthy food at home and opting to eat fast food, there could be no confusion as to how a large number of people are suffering from obesity in America.

The major culprit of obesity in America is food habits in which people consume more than is required by the body. On top of over eating, people gain no physical exertion which adds up to the misery. It should be noted however that hormone disorders could also contribute towards obesity in America and it is not always the patients  unhealthy lifestyle alone.

Obesity in America could lead to various health conditions and serious diseases. These health conditions include the patient suffering from severe depression and low self-esteem due to their size, who would therefore find it extremely difficult to lead a normal life as their social standing could be affected. Serious diseases include heart disease and diabetes. In the most serious cases, obesity could even result in death.

Although fat cells are difficult to deal with scientists have come up with certain methodologies to combat the situation. Obesity in America could be treated and cured.  This would require a strict diet and vigorous exercises to help you shed the pounds. Other choices included gastric bypass surgery or implanting an adjustable stomach, but that is only if you are at least 100 pounds overweight and have a BMI over 40. There’s also a financial concern attached to all these surgical procedures because they come with a high cost.

If obesity in America is to be changed, a life style change is essential. Therefore what you eat and how much you eat should be something you are always mindful of. You ought to make sure that kids lead a healthy lifestyle and get a healthy diet. A study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), showed that children who are overweight between the ages of 10-15 years are very likely to be obese at the age of 25.

Obesity Chart

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

Do you want to hear anyone calling you obese?. It isn t merely being called fat but being referred to as having uncontrollable body weight issues that are above average and now pose as a severe risk to the health. But before reaching a level of obesity there are means and indicators that will help people maintain their ideal body weight so as to avoid falling into the obese category. One such method is the obesity chart.

The obesity chart could also be referred to as the BMI or Body Mass Index chart as it gives an approximate calculation of a person s current weight and not merely stating if someone is obese. The BMI does not directly calculate body fat but it is very closely correlated to measures of body fat that takes into consideration a person s height and weight and uses a mathematical formula to calculate a result. The obesity chart shows the possible variations of height and weight in order to calculate a person s BMI and can be used by anyone regardless of their ethnicity, race, gender or age.

The most commonly used obesity chart is the BMI calculator however there are many other types of obesity charts available but it is best to find a chart where you would be able to understand without difficulty. Some charts offer readers with different data on how to read an obesity chart whilst some other charts have figures displayed in tableau format for readers to go through. The obesity chart is the ideal indicator for people to find out where they are on the weight scale as it also gives people their privacy to find out if they are indeed obese.

After you get hold of the results then it is time to interpret it and you should know how to get about doing it accurately. BMI calculators or obesity charts usually will overlook important information such as muscle overtone in athletes and loss of muscle mass in older people, so we cannot adamently say it is 100% accurate. If you are in doubt, the best thing to do would be to consult a medical practitioner for clarification of your situation. That way you can avoid misunderstandings.

Someone who suffers from obesity does run a higher risk at developing a number of health conditions. Therefore it is always best to check yourself using the obesity chart as a guideline to maintaining a healthy body weight.

Epidemic Obesity

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

Obesity epidemic is a term which describes the timely and accurate health condition caused by overweight populations around the world. Isn’t it shocking to find that obesity has become an epidemic in literal sense?. The obesity epidemic condition in America outweighs the gravity of the problem in every country in the world bringing forth health hazards which proclaim National emergency in the frontline.

While obesity epidemic is frequent in both children and adults, the the darker side of the condition is obese children who turn adults gaining heart diseases, diabetes, arthritis and even cancer, at an earlier age than earlier generations.

In the case of American obesity epidemic the cause is related to bad eating habits. Fast foods, tinned, canned and packeted food items are nothing but culprits in this case. Bad eating habits, excessive time spent watching television and lack of physical exercise all contribute to get obesity epidemic spread steadily across generations.

Some obese people claim that obesity epidemic is a genetic condition. While obesity can be determined through a genetic predisposition to acquire a certain body type, we cannot point the finger at genetics to make us over-weight because quite naturally, we were not born with the obesity epidemic. However, it cannot be denied that environment plays a part in obesity which may make children of one generation heavier than the previous. When we talk about the environment, it is crucial to look at the lifestyles we have acquired and the amount of exercise we get on a daily basis. These habits too can quite naturally be passed down to generations without our conscious notice or effort.

According to statistics, we see no progress in to curing this so called obesity epidemic. The number of people suffering from the obesity epidemic gets recorded as higher as on each passing day.

Isn t it ironic and absurbed that a part of human population suffers from obesity epidemic when nearly half of the population on earth is dying out of hunger and poverty? So where should we draw the line between food and well being? And what do we do about the temptations and all those yummy dishes and sweets?   Whatever said and done, at the end of the day, they are all individual choices!

Teenage Obesity Problem

Although the television has become part and parcel of our everyday life, TV commercials quite tactfully encourage people to consume more and more. Therefore, you will need to be very careful in your approach path to your girl or boy.

Don’t ever blame your children even if they suffer from teenage obesity. It is improtant that you become careful not to hurt your child’s feeling in the process of prosing a changed lifestyle. There may be activities such as watching TV that your child is reluctant to break because he/she would have formulated it as a habit. So take the most sensible approach to talk to your kids in the best and the most friendly way you could. Show them the risks and implications and state out your concerns for them and teenage obesity. Explain potential risks that they could run in to due to teenage obesity and make a few suggestions on how they can lose weight. If you know how to put things across to your child, he/she will most certainly live up to your standards and get rid of teenage obesity in no time.

Obesity Surgery

Saturday, July 18th, 2009

Obesity is the second leading cause of preventable deaths in America. Often obesity leads to health problems such as diabetes and heart disease. The aim of obesity surgery, also known as weight loss surgery or bariatric surgery is to limit the amount of your food intake. Surgery can be carried out in several ways, the most common being gastric bypass surgery and implanting a stomach band.

Gastric bypass surgery, one form of obesity surgery, is a fast way to lose weight and is mostly recommended for patients who have a risk of suffering from heart damage or other serious health problems. It is however, only a few people that can undergo this form of surgery, after a screening process carried out by specialists, as it is very risky. Certain measures are also taken to ensure the patient’s psychological well beings is at a proper state before carrying out the surgery. Gastric bypass surgery reduces the amount of food a person can hold in their stomach which may bring about negative implications both psychologically and physiologically in time to come. So it’s not a joke!.

Adjustable stomach band is another type of surgery which is less severe and which brings forth less complications. It can be reversed by surgeons if necessary. This method too, limits the amount of food that can be consumed. This is best for children. Side-effects such as nausea or abdominal pain can be suffered by the patient following the implanting of the band.

You should consider obesity surgery if you ve tried unsuccessfully to shed pounds by exercising and by trying out various diets. It is recommended that you consider surgery if you are 100 pounds over your ideal weight and if you have a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 40.

Surgery will not only be enough to achieve your perfect BMI, healthy eating styles as well as regular exercises are both needed in order to maintain proper weight even after the surgery. So a surgery is not the only answer to your burning problem.

Here are a few points to notes before obesity surgery. Ensure that you are financially ready as you may have to visit your doctor for several follow-up appointments and even before the surgery and insurance may not cover all costs. Know that obesity surgery comes coupled up with lifestyle changes, changed food habits and requirement for exercises on a daily basis therefore your lifestyle will change impacting your psychological well being. You should remember, however, that the surgery does have it risks and side effects. Risks may include infections and hernias.

Obesity (Sad) Facts

Saturday, July 18th, 2009

We are all focused on a very intriguing topic these days. And that obsession is about weight. And with good enough reason as research says that one in every three American between the ages of 20 and 74 is overweight, which is about 58 million of the people in the country. But is being overweight the same as being obese, as many people tend to think today? Here are some obesity facts to clear the air about that.

Overweight, as the word says itself, is having an excess amount of weight in your body as fat, muscle, water and bone. Your weight is compared to other, average, weights of a person of the same gender, height and build, and you are then considered either overweight or not. Being obese is when only the body fat is measured, and it is found to be more than what a normal person of the same age, gender and height has in that given environment. There are many people who could be considered overweight, but not obese. But of course, practically, the tendency for overweight people to be obese is much higher.

There are some obesity fact that are quite shocking. For example, the diseases that are shown to affect those who are obese is a very long list, and it shows clearly that obesity is pretty much the root cause for many health and psychological problems in the country today. Facts that show how obesity can double the risk of high blood pressure in a person, or that nearly 70% of heart disease patients are also obese are indeed some outrageous facts. These obesity facts are quite scary huh?

The causes for obesity can be many and varied. The most obvious cause for obesity would be the harmful lifestyles and eating habits. But there could be other reasons as well which lead to a person becoming obese. There are some anti depressant drugs that are said to have after effects of causing obesity in a person, while many disease conditions like hypothyroidism has also caused people to gain weight suddenly and become obese. Another cause which none of us have control over would have to be genetics. Many obesity facts show that for some reason or the other, there are a few of us who are more inclined towards being overweight and obese than others.

General Obesity Statistics

Saturday, July 18th, 2009

Obesity in America is so bad that it has been called an epidemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a person is deemed to be obese if he has a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or above. Meaning that the person consumes more than what is required by the body. As a result the person would suffer from diabetes, heart disease and metabolic syndrome to name a few. The main causes of obesity are said to be unhealthy eating habits and a sedentary lifestyle. The main cause of obesity is bad food habit and lack of exercise however, hormonal changes are also at fault.

The obesity statistics are somewhat staggering. It is said that virtually two-thirds of American adults above the age of 20 , that is 66 percent of the population, are said to be obese, according to results from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES)  . Out of these obesity statistics, 33 percent are said to be women whereas only 30 percent are said to be men. Another survey by NHANES shows that the prevalence rates of children aged between 2 to 5 years has increased from 5 percent to 13.9 percent over the last few years. A lot of children too are therefore facing a high risk of being obese. This risk can be seen in another study showing obesity statistics, conducted by CDC which showed that children who are overweight between the ages of 10-15 years are very likely to be obese at the age of 25.

Obesity statistics are alarming in America however the positive point is that it can be prevented if correct actions are taken. The deaths caused by obesity only becomes secondary to deaths caused by tobacco and right now it is the second most leading cause of death in the United States. An estimated 300, 000 deaths are said to be caused as a result of obesity each year. As stated earlier, diabetes is very common among those who are obese, particularly type 2 diabetes. 80 percent of those suffering from type 2 diabetes are said to be related to obesity according to obesity statistics by the Wellness International Network Limited.

These obesity statistics from America are quite scary to begin with and that is why the situation has been named an apidemic. If people could become more careful and aware of the implications and adapt new lifestyles that are healthier on their food habits and the amount of exercises they receive, perhaps obesity statistics will start changing?.
