Fruit can make you fat and cause type 2 diabetes.

That is the result of a new Swedish study performed by MD Christer Enkvist.

One example is that of a 64-year-old woman. She had been treated for type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure for years. She weighed 274 pounds. In 2007 her new doctor suggested that she should stop eating the 2 bananas she had for snack each day.

2 years later she lost 66 pounds. She stopped her diabetes treatments and her blood pressure medication has been cut down to half. She claims she did not do any other diet or lifestyle changes.

 

It doesn’t tell anything about the diet nor the lifestyle. But if she didn’t change anything else than remove those 2 bananas, it did have an effect. If you are like this overweight woman, you need to look at what you eat, cut down and make better choices. She chose to cut down her fruit intake. Personally, I would have tried to lower my portions instead. But that is a personal choice.

Christer Enkvist has many examples like the one above and he is now criticizing the Swedish authorities for not telling the whole truth about fruits.

It is not only in Sweden where these types of discussions are going on. Recently Journal of Clinical Investigation published an article on the subject. Their study showed that fructose (the sugar you find in fruits) cause more belly fat than glucose (regular sugar or corn sugar) even if the same amount of calories is consumed.

Does this mean that we should stop eating fruits?

I still think that fresh fruit is better than most other foods. But if you are eating healthy and still have a weight problem, or find that you stil have too much belly fat, you might want to consider cutting down on your fruit intake. You could probably swap some of the fruits for fresh vegetables instead.
